Joe Stock is an IFMGA-licensed mountain guide based in Anchorage, Alaska. Joe’s book The Avalanche Factor won the 2024 National Outdoor Book Award. The NOBA committee celebrated the visual and graphical content of the book but what really impressed me was how Joe captures the modern take on avalanche education in a way that other books haven’t. Specifically, Joe emphasizes a big-picture perspective: get your head out of the pit and pay more attention to the terrain.
