Ice rescue picks should be worn whenever you are on ice. There are three styles to choose from, each with pros and cons.

• In-line (this style): Low-profile, easy to take on and off, simple. But stock models do not float and are often too easy or hard to pull apart. This is where my modifications come in.
• V-holster: This is the style preferred in Northern Europe, and it is a great option. These picks are less likely to come off, and even if they did, the tethers will allow you to refind them. I don’t like that these take up so much real estate on my chest, making layering and the sternum strap awkward. I also struggle with tangled tethers. If you get these, get one with a hinge (rather than solid plastic) so you can adjust the angle of the V.
• Tethered picks: These are meant to be used with ice rescue suits, tethered to each cuff. If these are just hanging around your neck, they will likely fall off when you need them.

My modifications

• Foam on each handle to ensure that the picks float.
• Magnets in each pick for better retention.

Magents are cool! But they might not be appropriate for people with pacemakers.
